What is Project-Based Learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) as defined by PBLWORKS.org is:

"A teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects."

PBL is built on the idea that there are better ways for some students to learn and grow. The focus of PBL is to help shape students into self-reliant learners with a mastery of 21st-century skills. We have found that the key to success isn’t based on how much a student can memorize, but rather if they are able to set reasonable goals, create a plan to meet those goals, and then follow through on that plan. In a world where the jobs available post-graduation may not even exist today, this is an immensely valuable ability.

In PBL, lessons are not like a traditional classroom. We push our students beyond just listening to lectures and memorizing facts. Instead, teachers guide and help students turn their personal interests and culture into well thought-out projects. Students explore topics they enjoy while learning real-world skills like: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, Growth mindset, Independence, Project Management...and so much more!

Technical Academies of MN Environmental Literacy Plan

CHOICE Technical Academy is dedicated to establishing an educational environment that fosters a connection and commitment to the environment in our school community while working towards a healthy planet where all people live in balance with the Earth.

Each year, students engage in several activities and experiences to increase their environmental literacy in the five indicator areas below:

Indicator Area 1: Awareness

Students demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between the environment and human life and the diversity of life that shares the earth with humans.

Indicator Area 2: Knowledge

Students have knowledge of how natural systems function and how human systems interact with and depend on them.

Indicator Area 3: Attitudes

Students demonstrate respect and concern for the earth's health and the motivation to participate in environmental stewardship.

Indicator Area 4: Skills

Students possess the skills needed to identify and critically analyze environmental issues, and to contribute to resolving the root of environmental challenges.

Indicator Area 5: Action

Students have the capacity, or are increasing their capacity, to perceive and interpret the health of environmental and social systems and take appropriate action to maintain, restore, or improve the health of those systems.
